How to Maintain Dry Skin (7 Easy Ways to Healthier, More Hydrated Skin)

As we've discussed before, dry skin occurs when skin doesn't retain sufficient moisture. And unfortunately, dry skin is not great for the aging process. This means ensuring you use the right kind of products for your skin and do everything you can to prevent it from aging is incredibly necessary!

The best prevention for dry skin is to find a consistent skin care routine that works, and to stick to it. Consistency is key.

1. When choosing products look for skincare ingredients that give back to the skin and avoid anything that would strip the skin of its natural oils.

Ingredients like aloe, jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and phospolipids help to heal the skin and mimic your skin’s natural oils. ETHYST® Daily Ritual 24/7 Moisturizer and ETHYST® Holy Grail Facial Oil have almost all of these ingredients in them.

Additionally, they increase hydration, regulate the oil process, and help to keep the health of the skin barrier intact without risking clogged pores.

2. Hydrate well. Both inside and out.

Ensure you are drinking enough water each day. Track your water intake and drink your weight in ounces daily. You can use an app or even one of those dry erase stickers on your water bottle to take note of your water intake for the day.

If you are a big coffee or soda drinker, try to drink one extra cup of water for each caffeinated beverage you consume.

Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing or washing your hands. This helps plug the spaces between your skin cells and seal in moisture while your skin is still damp.

Not a fan of the feel of richer, luxurious creams? To reduce the feel, rub a small amount into your hands and then pat it over the affected areas until neither your hands nor the affected areas feel greasy.

3. Avoid using scrubbing devices or tools.

To avoid damaging the skin, stay away from bath sponges and scrub brushes. If you don't want to give up using a device altogether, opt for something like a Crystal Facial Roller and a 100% cotton washcloth.

A facial roller helps with lymphatic drainage and stimulates microcirculation in the skin, which can really help to awaken dull, dry skin.

4. Use gentle cleansers

Stay away from foaming cleansers and cleansers containing harsh ingredients which can strip away the skin's natural oils.

Use something hydrating and full of antioxidants to minimize stressors like ETHYST® Clarity Cleanse.

5. Limit yourself to one 5- to 10-minute bath or shower daily.

If you bathe more than that, you may strip away much of the skin's oily layer and cause it to lose moisture. Use lukewarm rather than hot water, which can wash away natural oils.

Also, don't keep soak your face in running water. Learn more about how to properly wash your face and cause less damage here.

6. Never, ever scratch your skin.

Most of the time, a good, hydrating moisturizer like the ETHYST® Daily Ritual 24/7 Moisturizer can help to control itching. Another secret trick is to use a cold pack or compress to relieve itchy spots.

7. Use a humidifier in the winter.

Set the humidifier to around 60%. This level that should be sufficient to replenish the top layer of the skin assisting in repairing your skin and, ultimately, a more healthy barrier function.

With these 7 top tips, you should be on your way to healthier, more hydrated skin in no time!
